NEWS FROM STEVEN (FLASH) GORDON
“It took 27 months but I got a British Columbia medical license, and I worked in Mackenzie this last summer. Canadian docs work fee-for-service, and bill one insurer, the government. American physicians have come under a crushing burden of overregulation since 2008, it keeps getting worse, and most are at burnout. I had a wonderfully productive summer, focusing on patient care rather than data entry. I finished with renewed joy in my work. The best parts of the Canadian system, I fear, won’t make it across the border. But the wait lists are real, people [“wait] 18 months for hip replacements, MRIs, and even hernia repair. Still we have to remember that more care is not necessarily better care.
“In other news we’re expecting our second grandchild.
“Bob Breedlove was not a part of our class but he influenced a lot of us. He died a week ago.”
