“For many years, Lew was my best friend.  Living in  different cities over the past 35 years we always promised to see each other more frequently than the yearly visits that we normally managed. It’s hard to believe that his enthusiasm, his joyous attitude and his trenchant analytical ability is gone.

“Lew was one of my closest friends in high school and was my Pierson College roommate the last three years at Yale. We both spent most of our time in the Britton Haddon Memorial writing for the Yale Daily News. Eventually I became managing editor and Lew became Executive Editor filling two of the top three editorial roles. Later Lew was also sports editor, taking over when Peter Diamond took a leave.  His weekly sports column was must reading.

“Rich Williams, our third roommate in the room in the Pierson lower courtyard now known as “The Plantation” endured late night phone calls, endless carping about bad editing and the banging of typewriter keys every evening as we pounded out stories.

“We grew up in West Hartford, Conn., where we went to the Kingswood School (now Kingswood-Oxford). Despite a small frame, Lew was a varsity  baseball player, soccer player and wrestler.  I never hear the Doors first album without flashing back to nights we spent at his house working on a Russian History paper.

“Lew gravitated to writing about sports when he got to Yale. He was also active in state politics. He interned with U.S. Rep. Robert Steele one summer and we lived together in Alexandria, Va., along with Tom Queen and the late Larry Alexander. After graduation he headed the press operation in Steele’s unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign.

“Lew’s Yale Daily News experience popped up unexpectedly last Fall. Lew had written a bylined story about a Yale Record prank that Ben Carson referred to in his campaign autobiography. Reporters started calling Lew from the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere to confirm whether Carson’s story was true. The answer was “mostly”.

“From his days at Yale, Lew will be fondly remembered by many friends from Pierson College; from the News, including the many members of the class of 1974 who he guided through the “heel”; and by fellow members of Book & Snake. Those of us who were on the 1972 Yale Daily News Board have many memories of working with him. Sadly, he is the fourth member of our board to pass away, following Richard Schwartz, Larry Alexander and Reggie Krasney.

He will be missed by many.
