Quoth Pete Townshend of The Who, “The kids are alright.” Knock on wood. Grace is enjoying her work as a research assistant on food and food policy, ghost-writing mostly. Her husband, Barry, had a terrific series, “Downward Dog”, which ABC foolishly discontinued: too perceptive, too emotive, too intellectually alive to fit with their idea of the market, I guess. My son Phillip has moved out of public relations, his field in college, and into camera work, small independent projects in and around L.A. As for me, I’m still teaching psychology and sociology as a community college adjunct, and acting as faculty advisor to the campus gay-straight alliance. For the Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association, I’ve helped bring in another fifteen thousand dollars for LGBT scholarships, awarded both to high school seniors and college kids. I’m still reading French novels for my French book club at l’École française de Chicago; but there’s a new production of The Picture of Dorian Gray set in 1980s’ Manhattan at Chicago’s City Lit Theater. I’m planning on attending. A group of “Prime Timers” is reading and discussing the book before the play, and I’ve signed up to join them. I downloaded the book onto my brand new Kindle, a birthday gift, and have just begun to discover or to re-discover the delight of Oscar Wilde’s witty banter — the same rambunctious species that lurks from between the lines of his wonderful plays.
